Important Update: Due to the safety of our team, we are no longer able to make appointments for dogs that have aggressive tendencies. This includes dogs that are fear aggressive and/or territorial. It is best that these pets are seen at a full-service veterinary hospital where heavy sedation is an option.

Common Rockfish Pet Vaccination Questions

Common-Rockfish-Pet-Vaccination-Questions

It’s National Immunization Awareness Month and our pets, like us humans, need to be kept up to date on their vaccinations. Vaccines are the simplest way to lower the risk of your pets contracting preventable diseases. Without taking precautions, your pet could potentially get very sick. You’re not only protecting your furry family members, though. Vaccinating pets protects those in contact with them from contracting illnesses, too. Here at Total Quality Mobile Veterinary Care, we’re thrilled to deliver safe and effective vaccinations to our patients’ homes.

How Does Vaccinating My Pet Work?

Just like vaccines for people, pet immunizations are tested for safety before becoming available for use. Vaccines activate the immune system causing it to create specific antibodies that target a particular disease. This prepares the body to fight against that disease the next time it enters the body.

What Are Some Common Vaccines For Pets?

Different species can carry different diseases and therefore should be vaccinated differently.. Here are some common viral and bacterial illnesses dogs and cats are commonly vaccinated against.

Typical Diseases in Dogs

  • Kennel Cough
  • Canine Distemper
  • Rabies
  • Lyme Disease
  • Leptospirosis
  • Hepatitis
  • Parvo
  • Heartworms

Typical Diseases in Cats:

When Do Vaccinations Begin?

Vaccinating young dogs and cats typically kicks off at around 8 weeks of age. Once they’re an adult, vaccines are updated yearly or every three years usually. Your vet will let you know when your pet needs their vaccines.

Can Pets Develop Side Effects?

While it is possible that your pet could experience mild side effects, many don’t have any at all. Common side effects include:

  • Decreased appetite
  • Swelling at injection site
  • Discomfort at injection site
  • Mild fever
  • Sneezing or coughing

These side effects usually are short-lived, only lasting a few days. If your pet displays more severe side effects such as vomiting or diarrhea, allergic reaction, severe swelling, or sudden collapse, contact your veterinarian immediately.
